Credit card travel insurance is one of the most underused benefits in Canada. Most Visa Infinite and World Elite Mastercard products include travel emergency medical, trip cancellation/interruption, flight delay, and baggage insurance — potentially replacing $300–$800 in annual standalone policy costs.

What's Typically Covered

Travel emergency medical (most important): covers hospital bills abroad, typically $1–5M per trip. Most cards cover 15–25 consecutive days; premium cards extend to 31 days. Trip cancellation: reimburses non-refundable costs if you cancel for covered reasons (illness, death, natural disaster). Flight delay: meals and accommodation if delayed 4–12 hours. Lost/delayed baggage: compensation for bags lost by airlines.

The activation requirement

Most credit card travel insurance requires you to charge at least a portion of your trip (flights, hotel) to that card to activate coverage. Check your certificate of insurance — not all cards activate on partial charges.

Cards with the Best Travel Medical Coverage

The Amex Platinum provides $5M emergency medical for trips up to 31 days — the most comprehensive of any Canadian personal card. The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite and Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite both offer $2M for 25 days — sufficient for most Canadians. The BMO Ascend World Elite provides $5M for 21 days. For travellers over 65, most cards reduce coverage significantly; consider a standalone supplemental policy.
